BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

According to the Office of the Chief Dental Officer of Canada, Canada is among the world leaders in oral health. Despite this, there are growing concerns about the rising rates of HPV-related mouth and throat cancers. The link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer is well established; fortunately, thanks to detection and vaccination, Canada has one of the lowest incidence rates of cervical cancer in the world. The HPV- related mouth and throat cancers, however, present a different picture. In Canada, about 25% to 35% of mouth and throat cancers are related to oral HPV infection; and in 2012, the incidence rate of HPV- associated oropharyngeal cancer was more than 4.5 times higher in males than females. Furthermore, HPV vaccination uptake in Canada is higher among females than males. Physicians and nurses in public health and clinical settings have a role to play in the fight against HPV transmission, as do oral health professionals. Oral health professionals can play a key role in preventing HPV infection and HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers by raising awareness, educating and offering counselling to their clients, and promoting evidence-based preventive and diagnostic interventions.

In light of the above information from the Chief Dental Officer of Canada, VDDS would like to be proactive in addressing this very important issue impacting our community, by creating awareness and educating our professionals to help with the fight against HPV-related mouth and throat cancers. In addition, we see this as a very timely presentation as vaccines are currently very much a hot topic among dental professionals. Dentists safely administer injections several times a day as a regular part of their practice. Now with the BC Government’s 2021 decision to include community-based dentists and their clinical staff teams in the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out, dentists in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health authority regions are approved as COVID-19 vaccinators, as noted in the Provincial Health Officer’s February 23 Public Health Order.

Dentistry is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in America due to the bio-aerosols that are generated by procedures in the mouth.  These aerosols may remain suspended in the air for significant periods of time, move with air currents, and come in contact with others.  As more research comes to light on the possibility of airborne transmission of Covid-19, the science of eliminating the risk of these bio-aerosols becomes more important.  Join Dr. Wilson J. Kwong as he hosts a discussion with Dr. Brian Fleck, PhD, Peng, an hvac/airflow expert from the University of Alberta and Mike Meade, Chief Technology Officer from Pura Air Purifications on how the science works, what the research is telling us and what you should be looking for in air purification solutions to protect your staff and patients so you can stay open during a pandemic.

Dr. Wilson J. Kwong

Founder of Inspire Dental Group.  Dr. Kwong is also the founder of Vancouver Dental Education Centre (VDEC) for new dentists as well as VDEC Elite.  He is a clinical instructor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry and a respected lecturer throughout North America.  He is the Chief Medical Officer at Pura Air Purification.

Mike Meade

Mike is founder and partner/owner of AIRPLUS Industrial Corp, specializing in industrial air applications.  Mike started the business in 1998 as an independent manufacturer’s rep, and year-over-year it has grown into the most respected firm of its kind in British Columbia.  He is the Chief Technology Officer at Pura Air Purification.

Dr. Brian Fleck, PhD, Peng, ICD.D

Dr. Fleck is a professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alberta.  His research specializes in fluid dynamics, mixing and turbulence, multiphase flow and atomization, HVAC and wind energy.
